One of PTP’s great strengths is integrated programming, tailored to individual needs. We work hard to ensure seamless pathways for our participants, helping them to identify key strengths and skills, and find ways to bridge the gaps that prevent them from learning and finding work. Participants often arrive at PTP seeking one kind of program, but as their training progresses and their needs evolve, staff are able to direct them to other programs and services.

Stephen Adapts to the Canadian Workplace

Stephen had been in Canada only a few months when he enrolled in PTP’s Building for the Future program. Over the next few weeks, he was able to identify a career path – welding – but he realized that his math and English skills weren’t at the level required to enrol in welding training. PTP’s Literacy and Essential Skills program was perfect for Stephen’s goals, and after a few months of strengthening his literacy he was able to begin his welding education. Before long, he realized that he would need to find a “survival” job to support himself during his training. Staff referred him to PTP’s Employment Services, where he got the support he needed to find a temporary job and become comfortable in Canada’s workplace culture. In July 2018, Stephen successfully completed his welding training, and returned to PTP’s Employment Services for help finding a permanent welding job. He is now successfully employed as a welder!

Paula Re-enters the Workforce

A seasoned administrator with more than 10 years’ work experience, Paula took several years out of the workforce to grapple with personal issues. Re-entry into the job market proved difficult: her confidence was low and she worried that her skills might not be up to date. Paula came to PTP for support and guidance. She began with our Choices: Take Charge for Life and Work program, and then registered with PTP’s Employment Services to begin a supported job search. Paula also bolstered her computer and job search skills with a two-week program with PTP’s Literacy and Essential Skills instructor.

The computer training confirmed her ability and proficiency with MS Office, while a communications class helped her gain confidence interacting with groups and individuals in the workplace. Flexible programming tailored to Paula’s needs provided the support she needed to get back to work. Recently, Paula applied for a job as a Job Developer Assistant with PTP. She was the successful candidate and her first day was October 16th! She is getting used to being back in the work culture and looks forward to being part of PTP’s supportive team.
