PTP, a leader in adult literacy and workforce development, is seeking a supply instructor to support two key learner groups:
- Newcomers to Canada who aim to improve their English for work, develop employability skills, understand workplace customs, and prepare for job interviews.
- Adults facing literacy barriers who are strengthening their reading, writing, math, and computer skills to prepare for work or further education and training, or to achieve greater independence.
Job Description
You will be available to provide occasional coverage in our Newcomer and Get SET (Skills, Education, and Training – formerly, Literacy and Basic Skills) programs. You will be equally comfortable delivering classes in person and online. You will be responsible for lesson planning, materials preparation and classroom delivery of the program in order to provide program continuity for learners. You will be expected to integrate new programming initiatives into your lesson planning, and maintain, through development and innovation, programming that achieves the highest standards in adult education practice.
Responsibilities
- Delivering classes and facilitating groups online/onsite
- Preparing lesson plans and materials that incorporate a holistic approach to workforce English
- Providing literacy instruction in communication, numeracy, and digital technology skills to learners in accordance with Get SET program guidelines and adult education principles
- Creating and maintaining a positive learning environment that respects the experiences and needs of adult learners
- Providing ongoing feedback to students regarding their work and progress
- Attending meetings as required
- Working with the Program Manager to ensure compliance with program deliverables
- Adhering to PTP policies
- Undertaking other assignments as required
Qualifications
- A post-secondary degree in a related area
- TESL certification is considered an asset
- Knowledge of adult learning theory and demonstrated experience with adult learners from diverse backgrounds; experience teaching essential skills an asset
- Ability to be self-directed but flexible; organized and meet deadlines; ability to work independently with minimal supervision but collaboratively with the manager and other staff
- Ability to work with disadvantaged populations using supportive and encouraging methods
- Ability to manage multi-level groups and continuous intake
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and human relations skills to interact effectively with diverse student and staff populations
- Advanced computer skills and experience with online learning using Moodle, Google Classroom, Zoom, MS Teams
- Available on a short notice
- Flexibility across the subject and audience
